Before The Wedding

Yesterday I really impressed myself because I was better than I thought I could be.

I had spent the morning stressing myself out because I was going to do something I had not done before.  And no matter how many years go by, the fear of not doing things properly, although less often, still inflicts itself upon me from time to time.  Unable to work I read the last chapter of Elena Ferrante’s trilogy, then walked three times around the Avenue de Breteuil. I was running through my head everything I had to do, writing interview questions and repeating them to myself, convinced that I had forgotten something but in an almost obsessive way as if I were memorizing them to recite for a play. Finally I convinced myself that everything I know will help me figure out what I don’t. The rest I can invent later.

Thankfully Nora who had shared the TEDx experience with me two years ago was back from San Francisco. I was so happy to see her in front of the wedding shop a few minutes into the first interview ! Talking, laughing and admiring the dresses together created an atmosphere that soaked through our work.

About 3 minutes after I awkwardly read my first two interview questions, it became fun.  Then the rest of it was amazing. I had the incredible privilege to work with a French couturier whose work I greatly admire.  Christophe did not need much storytelling to piece together his life (and I truly envied him for that as I stood behind the camera). Ever since he was five he fell in love (with wedding dresses) and lives out that love through the beautiful ephemeral dresses he creates. And what better than spend three hours in a room full of handmade lace and embroidered flowers whose beauty can cure anything?

We worked on shooting the communication material on the dress we were creating together, from its creation all the way to the finished dress, including several interviews.  For an afternoon we ran around filming sketches, dressing and undressing mannequins, going through pieces of lace, choosing which ones we loved best, and observing the young ladies in the workshop carefully adding pins and sewing pieces.  We were often distracted by the beauty of all the surrounding dresses.  Then there was the dress, which was more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. My work as a communicator was not so bad either.  Over time, I have developed quite an eye for piecing together stories, partly from following around our photographers and learning from I wished I had asked for.

That is one of the things I love most about entrepreneurship, one day you are doing something totally ordinary and the next, a page from your most extravagant dream becomes reality.  All of it or none of it is true: no, at least I don’t get attached to it; I just live in the moment.
